Good News vs. Bad News

Everyone loves good news.

Bad news is very depressing, but good news brings encouragement and hope that warms the heart and stirs the emotion of love.

Good news shines brightest when contrasted against the bad. So we will first look at the sad story of how things went wrong, then present the BEST news you will ever hear.

To understand it fully, we need to go back to the very beginning. The only reliable source for this story is the Bible.

The Story Begins

Part One

The Beginning

The first book of the Bible is called Genesis, which means “Beginning” or “Origin.” It is the record of how the world began and how all things came to be.

God created a perfect world with perfect people.

“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good...”

Genesis 1:31

Jesus says:

“...there is none good but one, that is God...”

Matthew 19:17

So when the Bible declares everything to be good, it means God was in everything, including Man. Man was good because God was in him.

God created one life, and from that one life every human being received life. Even Eve came from the one life God created when he made Adam (Gen 2:7). The life in Adam was perfect and good, and all of his children and their children would have received this same perfect life.

But Adam chose to serve a different master, and thus lost the life that made him good.

Part Two

The Bad News

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”

Romans 5:12

By choosing to obey someone other than God, Adam lost the life of God and became imperfect immediately. This one act made him a sinner, separated from God.

Since God is life, without God there is no life. Death, then, is the unavoidable result.

The life Adam now possessed was a life without God, a life of sin resulting in death. And this corrupted life has been passed on to every generation of men and women, including you and me (Acts 17:26).

When did all men sin?

All men sinned, or were separated from God, when Adam sinned. The life of Adam got corrupted, and it is this corrupt life that has been passed on to every generation.

We were born separated from God. Sinners in need of a Savior.

The Problem

Because of the nature that man was born with, he is unable to choose good (Romans 8:7-8). The will is corrupt. The heart is bound. This places man in a desperate dilemma with no way out on his own.

But God...

The Best News in the Universe

In the face of man's total hopelessness, God acted.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:16

This is not just a verse. It is the turning point of all human history. It is the answer to the problem no man could solve.

Part Three

The Solution

The plan to redeem man was rooted entirely in God's love. God found a different Father for mankind, one whose life is completely perfect and good.

This Father would choose good, and then pass that perfect and good life on to His children as a gift. That gift is Jesus Himself.

“And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”

1 John 5:11

To receive the carnal, corrupt life of Adam, all we needed to do was be born. The life received at birth made us sinners, separated from God. God's plan is to bring us back into union with Himself by giving us His life, thus redeeming us from sin.

“For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”

1 Corinthians 15:21-22

In Adam

Corruption. Death.

By having Adam's life in me, I am in him, and his life works death in me.

In Christ

Righteousness. Life.

When Christ's life is in me, by the same means I am in Him.

Part Four

How to Receive the Life of Christ

We can only have one life at any given time. We either have Adam's life or Christ's life. For Christ to live, I must die.

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Galatians 2:20

Death to self is the prerequisite for receiving the life in Christ. Believing in our death and accepting it is where faith comes in.

“For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.”

Galatians 3:26

All that we are is already in Christ. As we believe in who we are and what we are, we are made in the same image.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.”

Ephesians 2:8

We receive the life of Christ by accepting the gift of God, the life of His Son, which He has freely given to all mankind. But we must receive it for it to become our experience. Receiving is the hand of faith that believes.

Part Five

What Are the Benefits of This New Life?

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Your entire life is made new, proven by your works (Eph 2:10). The old patterns, the old corruption, the old defeat, the old slavery to sin, all of it is passed away.

“That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”

Ephesians 4:22-24

The new man is created in the same image of God, with pure righteousness as a lifestyle.

The old man is humanity with SIN working in it, producing evil actions and all manner of corruption. The new man is humanity with Divinity working in it, producing righteousness and true holiness.

This is not a self-improvement program. This is a resurrection.

A Personal Question

Do You Desire Such a Life?

What is working in you? Sin or Divinity? Who is King of your life, you or God? The answer can be found by examining the fruit of your life.

“Wherefore by their fruits you shall know them.”

Matthew 7:20

Are you tired of failure? Have you tried hard to be better and still find yourself unchanged? The only hope is for you to die. Die to self and to selfishness. Then you can have a new life where right doing flows naturally.

When the miracle of a changed heart takes place, and Jesus comes to live inside of you, He will be living out His life in you. Only then will the conflict and struggle be over, because you will have received the new life of Christ with Divinity working in it.

God is not far away. He is right here with you as you read. His Spirit is working in your heart right now. All you need to do is be willing to give Him your heart and surrender your life to Him, and ask Him to take you and remake you in His image.

If you are honest and sincere in this surrender, then He is faithful to do a work in you today.

Will you choose Him today?

Will you make Him your King today?

If you will, this would be the best news in the universe.
